METRIC DEFINITIONS

  • Listeners – A ‘listener’ is a single user who downloads content for either immediate or delayed consumption. Listeners are identified by a combination of IP address and user agent in accordance with the IAB filtering rules described in the IAB Podcast Measurement Technical Guidelines v2.2.
  • Downloads – A ‘download’ is a unique file request that was downloaded. Downloads include complete file downloads, progressive downloads, as well as partial downloads in accordance with the IAB Podcast Measurement Technical Guidelines v2.2 filtering rules (i.e. spiders and bots, data centers, one-minute of content minimum download, etc.). This process filters multiple requests from the same IP address, user agent, episode and date.
  • Publisher – An entity that represents a group of podcasts that it either commissions, produces itself or acts as the primary representative for that content in Australia.
  • Rank
    •  “Debut” indicates that the show is new to the ranker, making its debut for the first time in the last 13 months.
    •  “Return” indicates that the show has returned to the Top 200 after having not appeared in the previous reporting period(s).
  • Index (Monthly Podcast pop 18+) – Compares % of a podcast’s audience against the overall Australian monthly podcast listener population (age 18+). Eg: Index 125 “Genre X is 25% more likely than average monthly podcast listener to do purchase a new car.”

NATIONAL COMMUNITY RADIO AIRPLAY CHARTS LAUNCHED

“Community radio is the backbone of artists; it allows our music to be heard throughout remote regions and communities. It’s very important for us as artists to be a part of something that promotes community and local stories.” Emily Wurramara

The Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) is proud to announce the launch of the Community Radio Airplay Charts, a new weekly snapshot of Australian music being played on community radio across the country, tracking airplay across all community stations.

The Community Radio Airplay Charts will be available on amrap.org.au, replacing the current amrap.org.au download charts and offering artists and industry professionals valuable insights into which acts are resonating with audiences and where. The impact of community radio on the discovery and support of local music will be quantified using Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) technology. This new tool showcases Australian music supported by community radio, highlights the value of amrap.org.au as a platform for discovery, provides fresh promotional opportunities for local artists, labels and teams and recognises the essential role that community broadcasters play in Australia’s music ecosystem.

CBAA Music Director Andrew Khedoori emphasised the measurable impact community radio now has on Australian artists: “We have countless stories from Australian artists about the impact community radio has had on their music. At last, the value of community radio is no longer anecdotal and there for everyone to see.”

Building on this, the influence of community radio is evident in recent data. Between October 2024 and May 2025, AMRAP reported 250,000 plays of Australian music on community radio, tracked via their internal reports. The December 2024 Community Radio Listener Survey revealed significant findings: 60% of respondents reported feeling more connected to their local music scene through community radio. Additionally, over one-third discovered local cultural or music events via community radio, and one in ten financially supported an artist by purchasing music or merchandise after hearing them on a community station.

A cornerstone initiative of the CBAA, amrap.org.au has been behind great initiatives, including creating pathways for First Nations artists to be heard (First Sounds), presenting Australian artists to US audiences (Global Beat: Australia) and empowering community stations to produce live music events (Community Hubs). The Australian Music Radio Airplay Project offers free and easy access to unsigned and signed Australian musicians, independent and major record labels, and music business enterprises, generating airplay opportunities for Australian artists. By uploading music releases, artists can make their work accessible to Australian community radio stations and program makers, and potentially earn royalties through copyright. The platform’s Airplay tracking technology also allows artists to monitor where and when their songs are played, including the specific station.

The Community Radio Airplay Charts expand to provide data that truly highlights the reach and influence of community broadcasters in championing local talent.

HOW THE CHARTS WORK
National Top 20 Chart
All tracks uploaded and available via amrap.org.au are eligible to chart.

A weekly, all-genre ranking of the 20 most-played Australian tracks, updated and published every Friday AT 10.00 am AEST

Genre-Specific Charts
Supplementary charts breaking down airplay across genres, including:
Pop
Indie/Alternative
Rock & Metal
Hip Hop & R&B
Country / Blues / Roots
Electronic / Dance

Each chart entry includes
This Week’s Position (TW), Last Week (LW), Artist Name, Track Title, Highest Position (HP), and Weeks in Chart (TI).

Eligibility Criteria
Only tracks uploaded to amrap.org.au from 1 November 2024 onwards are eligible for airplay monitoring. Songs can chart for up to 12 weeks before becoming recurrent. Tracks older than 12 months will be excluded from November 2025.

NEW FEATURES
The AMRAP Airplay Charts are designed not only to celebrate artists but also to serve the music industry by:

Listen & Download Directly from the Chart
Broadcasters can preview each track with a built-in play button, and download broadcast-ready files straight from the chart page.

Highlighting Discovery & Diversity
Charts are calculated using a play cap of 25 spins per station, ensuring tracks need support from multiple broadcasters to chart. This promotes a wider variety of Australian music and reflects genuine nationwide appeal.

Community radio plays a vital role in the discovery and promotion of Australian music, often highlighting artists before they achieve mainstream success and amrap.org.au airplay tracking is made possible with support from the Community Broadcasting Foundation and APRA AMCOS.

AUSTRALIAN PODCAST RANKER – SEPTEMBER

Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA), in partnership with Triton Digital, has released the September results for the Australian Podcast Ranker. The Ranker is the country’s only official, third-party verified podcast measurement system, governed by a cross-industry Steering Committee and backed by strong collaboration across commercial, independent, and non-commercial publishers. It sets the benchmark for podcast data in Australia.

Lizzie Young, CEO of CRA said: “The Podcast Ranker delivers what every advertiser needs: certainty. Verified data showing exactly who’s listening, what they care about, and how to reach them when they’re most receptive.”

Who’s Listening, What’s Trending?

Post grand final fever, does podcast data reveal an even deeper divide between AFL and NRL fans?

Demos+ data shows AFL’s avid fans consume Sports podcasts at 49.6%, but their other preferences reveal distinct cultural markers – History ranks second at 32%, followed by Society & Culture at 30.3%. NRL fans show different priorities, with Sports at 37.7%, then Music at 27.4% and Technology at 25.3%.

While both groups share a passion for Sports, their broader podcast interests diverge significantly. AFL fans rounded out their top five with News and Technology (both 30.2%). NRL fans, meanwhile, complete their top five with Business and Comedy (both 23.3%). For brands, these patterns offer valuable cues – campaigns can adapt tone, creative and placement to align with each audience’s listening habits, particularly around key moments in their sporting seasons.

Nine to Provide Single, Unified Solution to Trade Across 9Now, Stan Sport and HBO Max

Nine today revealed how it is delivering on its proposition to unify ad data across 9Now, Stan Sport and HBO Max, streamlining access through a single, unified solution to create a powerful programmatic tool for brands to maximise campaign effectiveness.

With Nine maintaining control of the programmatic supply chain, the unification of data, reach and frequency represents a new level of transparency.

The unification allows for ease of trading and maximum efficiency across premium video brands – 9Now, Stan Sport and HBO Max – and will allow clients to not only continue to buy each asset individually but also allow for unified reach and frequency across all three. This will create greater scale for targeting segmentation as well as making campaign optimisation more efficient.

Utilising Nine’s 22 million verified signed-in users, Nine has consolidated its adtech and data infrastructure across all its assets – video, publishing and audio – resulting in richer audience insights and allowing brands to reach specific audiences with pinpoint precision.

The recent addition of advertising on Stan Sport, combined with Nine being appointed the exclusive sales representative of HBO Max in Australia, has allowed advertisers to achieve unparalleled impact and scale, delivered from a single, brand-safe ecosystem.

Nine’s Commercial Director – Digital, Nick Young, said: “We are focused on making it as easy as possible to access our highly-engaged customers and unlock the full potential of our data and programmatic stack. We’re cutting out waste so our clients can maximise as much of their budget into actual working media as possible, whilst maintaining the control and transparency they need.”

Nine Driving Into New Direct Advertiser and Small Business Markets by Growing Functionality of Nine Ad Manager

Nine’s self-serve advertising platform, Nine Ad Manager, is to receive a significant product upgrade to ensure ease of trading will maximise campaign effectiveness for direct advertisers, independent agencies and Australia’s 2.2 million SMBs.

Nine Ad Manager launched two years ago, with thousands of clients and SMBs now utilising the platform to buy Nine display advertising, search and social media inventory creating a one stop shop for growing businesses and direct advertisers. The platform also uses Artificial Intelligence to allow businesses to create their own creative for their advert.

Over the coming months, the platform’s functionality will evolve the user experience for both independent agencies and direct clients in an effort to simplify the self service buying process and grow the platform.

The upgrades include a media planning functionality that will streamline campaign strategy, allowing clients to better plan their cross channel advertising efforts across Nine’s video, display, search and social. There will also be dedicated sales resources to provide in-person support.

The addition of invoicing capabilities and credit terms, as well as Payto bank transfers, will provide a more efficient way to manage billing and track spending. The upgrade will also see the inclusion of prebuilt campaign templates to streamline the process to launch effective campaigns by providing proven, ready-to-use ad formats and structures.

These updates aim to create a more comprehensive and accessible self service platform, allowing users to monitor and optimize their campaigns with greater ease.

Nine Ad Manager allows small businesses to add display advertising across Nine’s entire digital network, from 9Honey to  and across mastheads like The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Australian Financial Review to their 9Now video campaigns using Nine Ad Manager.

Nine’s Commercial Director – Digital, Nick Young, said: “Nine Ad Manager has proven to be an effective way for Australian small businesses to reach specific households, with around 4000 clients using the platform so far. We are a brand safe environment and these product upgrades will ensure SMBs’ campaigns will have even more effectiveness using our trusted premium content on the most powerful screen in the home.”
