ABC NewsRadio, the nation’s only live and continuous radio news network, today celebrates 30 years as a rolling news service. And it’s in its prime, with strong audiences reaching nearly 6% of the population.

NewsRadio’s origins lie in the Parliamentary Proceedings Broadcasting Act of 1946, which required the ABC to broadcast on radio the proceedings of the House of Representatives and the Senate, a statutory obligation we still have today.

In 1988, the ABC moved live parliamentary broadcasting from Local Radio onto a new station dedicated to broadcasting live sessions of both houses of Federal Parliament, called the Parliamentary Broadcasting Network.

PBN’s remit was expanded in 1994, with the ABC taking advantage of the network’s national reach to launch a rolling news service on the days when parliament was not sitting. It became PNN, the Parliamentary and News Network.

ABC NewsRadio, as we now know it, was born.

Initially only available in the nation’s major cities, its coverage quickly grew to take in regional centres and remote areas. Today, NewsRadio has a network of 84 AM/FM transmitters, reaching an estimated 97.04% of Australians.

You can also hear NewsRadio’s continuous news service every day online via the ABC Listen website and ABC Listen app and on digital radio (DAB+).

Its TV audio channel on TV has further extended its reach to another 420 transmitters around the country.

Even in the most remote corners of the country, you can hear NewsRadio via the direct-to-home satellite service (VAST).

ABC News Top Stories takes silver in the July podcast ranker

The ABC has achieved our highest ever place for a podcast in the Triton Australian Podcast Ranker for July. ABC News Top Stories is the second most listened to podcast in Australia with 764,000 listeners up 177,000 from June.

The ABC continued to be the most represented publisher in the list with 33 titles in July and a number of ABC programs delivering record listener numbers.

Olympic fever saw another strong month for the ABC’s sport podcasts. Roy and HG gained significant audiences due in part to their special Paris Olympics podcast Roy & HG: People, Medals and Cheese. The program added 48,000 listeners for a new record of 149,000 and climbed 28 ranks to #41 on the list. ABC SPORT Daily remained the number one sport podcast in Australia and climbed 4 spots to number 21.

Audience appetite for news was also evident with Background Briefing climbing 62 ranks to #86 and gaining 31,000 listeners thanks to the Linton Besser presented Notorious series. PM gained 25 ranks and added 10,000 listeners for 52,000 listeners in July

Not Stupid which launched in May and featured for the first time in the June ranker grew 11,000 listeners and moved up 20 ranks to #89. Double J’s Bang On with Myf Warhurst and Zan Rowe which has been selling out live shows across Australia jumped 14 places and is just outside the top 100 at #106 with 66k monthly listeners.

The I Was Actually There podcast debuted in the ranker at #164, following its launch in June. The podcast and TV program, presented by creator Kirk Docker recounts gripping stories told by people who witnessed history first-hand.

Other titles that were big movers on the Ranker included CommSec Market with a 32% increase in monthly listeners* and Bizarre with Mick Molloy & Titus O’Reily jumping 4 places* to 133,196 listeners in July.

The Community Video Coordinator is responsible for managing the production and delivery of community led and focused stories, documentaries, social media campaigns, factual content and community messaging for TV, online broadcast and multimedia projects. These projects require the development of strong local Indigenous interest and the technical/creative participation of our Indigenous staff. The Community Video Coordinator will be required to provide informal training for community members in basic media skills development in the Tanami region of Central Australia.

This is a “hands-on” role which has a strong community development focus and requires a high level of technical and creative expertise in all facets of factual visual content production, from budgeting and scheduling through to post-production. The successful candidate will be a graduate of an accredited screen production course to at least Cert IV or Diploma level, or will have equivalent professional experience. They must be able to trouble-shoot problems in remote and challenging locations and be able to work with Indigenous Australians in cross-cultural settings. The Community Video Coordinator is required to coordinate PAW’s Video Department where duties include managing local Indigenous production staff, the professional development of our visual media workers, and departmental administration.

This position requires living remotely, calls for strong teamwork skills and can be challenging, requiring a resourceful, sociable and adaptable person to succeed. For the right person this is a rewarding and potentially life-changing role. The position offers unique opportunities for career development and will allow you to become a part of a very special community and contribute to its growth, developing an understanding of Warlpiri and other local cultures.

 

  • The role requires considerable travel through Aboriginal Lands rarely visited by outsiders.
  • The position is only open to Australian Citizens, residents or individuals holding a Working Visa valid until at least 2026.
  • The successful candidate will need a current National Police Check and the ability to obtain an OCHRE Card.
  • Housing in community is limited so it will be necessary to live in shared accommodation.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are strongly encouraged to apply.

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Demonstrated, credited experience in documentary and/or online video production for community end-use.
  • Experience working cross-culturally, preferably with indigenous Australians in remote settings.
  • Experience in video production training or media skills development.
  • Proficiency in Premiere or Final Cut, Editing & Colour grading.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong technical knowledge of different video camera systems, formats, audio and lighting equipment typically used in location shooting.
  • Demonstrated capacity for resourcefulness, self-motivation, planning and independent decision making.
  • Understanding of the political, social and economic factors affecting Indigenous Australians in remote areas.
  • Capacity to live and work with a small dedicated team in a remote setting.
  • Manual driver’s licence.

 

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Competency in After Effects or Motion.
  • Experience in data-wrangling and audiovisual archive systems file management.
  • Experience living and working in a remote Australian indigenous community.
  • Cert IV in Training & Assessment.
  • 4WD experience.

2025 SBS Journalism Cadetship opens for applications

Dedicated to the memory of late SBS journalist Bridget Munro.

Australia’s most trusted news service has announced the launch of its journalism cadetship program for 2025, aimed at cultivating the next generation of Australia’s journalistic talent.

SBS is today announcing the launch of the 2025 SBS Journalism Cadetship, a 12-month program designed to develop the skills and experience of journalism graduates and prepare them for exciting and rewarding careers in the profession. From 2025 onwards, the Cadetship will be dedicated to the memory of late SBS News journalist, Bridget Munro.

The SBS Journalism Cadetship offers journalism graduates a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic and diverse environment. Throughout the year, cadets will gain hands-on experience in SBS’s cross-platform newsroom in Sydney, as well as placements in Melbourne and Canberra. Cadets will work across a variety of SBS programs including Dateline, Insight, NITV News and current affairs, and SBS multilingual programs, ensuring a comprehensive development experience.

The program acknowledges the best and brightest journalism graduates, giving them an opportunity to kickstart and develop their careers at Australia’s most trusted news organisation. Cadets will benefit from the coaching and mentorship of a team of experienced journalists.
In 2025, SBS will offer three cadetship positions, including one identified placement for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander candidate, culturally and financially supported by NITV (National Indigenous Television).

All successful cadets participate in the same program of training and work experience.
SBS Director of News and Current Affairs, Mandi Wicks, said: “We are honoured to dedicate the SBS News and Current Affairs Cadetship to our late colleague and friend, Bridget Munro. About Bridget Munro
Bridget Munro, a talented, beloved and highly respected senior news producer at SBS, made a significant contribution to the field of journalism and the SBS community. The dedication of the cadetship in her memory honours her work and commitment to nurturing journalistic talent.
Aged just 34, Bridget Munro passed away suddenly from a short illness in November 2023, leaving behind her husband and two young daughters.

Bridget also left behind a powerful legacy. In the space of a decade, Bridget made a significant contribution to the industry through guiding, coaching and mentoring the next generation of journalists. The role of a daily news producer in a busy newsroom is not often celebrated; it is a role that requires a passion for news, a cool head under pressure and a commitment to make on-air colleagues shine. Bridget had all these qualities and more – other people’s success meant as much to Bridget as it did her own.
This posthumous honour will inspire journalists in their formative years, and beyond, to make the most of what you have, when you have it. Bridget’s contribution to Australian journalism will be measured by her quiet, yet enduring influence.

ABC farewells Director Audiences Leisa Bacon

The ABC’s Director Audiences Leisa Bacon has announced she is leaving the national broadcaster after a decade leading its core marketing and strategic audience functions.

Leisa has led the ABC’s marketing and audience teams through a period of great change and transformation as the ABC has evolved its digital platforms while remaining committed to delivering high-quality content to the public. Tracking rapidly changing audience trends in today’s fragmented media landscape has required a creative and data-driven marketing leader and Leisa has met these challenges and delivered significant results.

Leisa’s achievements include initiating content collaborations across the ABC, leading the audience launches for the ABC Kids app, ABC listen app, ABC NEWS app, log in to watch on ABC iview and ensuring ABC brands and services have kept pace with the changes in audience expectations.

Leisa has been integral in bringing the Audiences team together into a truly cross-functional team structure, reinforcing a culture of collaboration and prioritisation across both the team and the broader ABC.

ABC Managing Director David Anderson said Leisa’s achievements and experience prior to joining the ABC in 2014 meant she has been able to provide a strong understanding of audiences, stakeholder management, marketing, communications, digital, experience design and change management to the organisation.

“Leisa came to the ABC with the task of centralising our marketing and audience requirements to meet changing audience engagement in an increasingly fragmented media market.

“The ABC needed a sharp and dynamic marketing professional to meet these significant changes in the industry and Leisa has always stepped up to the challenge.

“Leisa has developed and led strategies to ensure the ABC remains relevant to audiences everywhere. She is passionate about the ABC and has been committed to making sure Australians have been aware of the contribution we make to the community through the services that entertain, inform and educate.

“Leisa played a key role in managing the ABC’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring the ABC remained an important and central source of news, information, and entertainment during that challenging time for all Australians.

“I want to thank her for her hard work and many contributions she has made across 10 years in the role. She has been a valuable executive and colleague, and we wish her well for the next stage in an already impressive career.”

Leisa Bacon said: “Since joining the ABC I have always viewed this as the best job in the country. We serve the Australian public, contribute to culture, and literally produce the best content in the country.

“I will always be an incredible supporter of the ABC, my amazing Audiences team and my fabulous boss, David Anderson.

“However, all things need to keep evolving. After an incredible 10 years with the ABC, I am going to be leaving on a bit of a career high. We, the ABC, are #1 in digital news, BVOD, TV network reach and trust.

“For the first time in my career I have long service leave and I plan on using this to take an extended holiday.”

Leisa Bacon joined the ABC as Director of Audience and Marketing in March 2014 after senior roles across the consumer products and health sectors, and arts.

Leisa’s final day at the ABC will be 6 September. Karen Madden will be Acting Director Audiences for the interim while the ABC undertakes a recruitment process.

104.1 2DAYFM ANNOUNCES FINAL HUGHESY, ED & ERIN BREAKFAST SHOW

Sydney’s 104.1 2DayFM today confirmed that the Hughesy, Ed & Erin Breakfast show has ended.

Hughsey, Ed and Erin said: “We’ve loved our time together on 2DayFM Breakfast, however, due to some of our families living in different cities we are unable to commit to 2025, so with a heavy heart we are moving aside so 2DayFM can find the team to take them forward in Breakfast. We are so grateful to Sydney for their support, and to double the number of listeners in three years is something we are immensely proud of, and we will miss each and every one of them.”

SCA thanks Dave Hughes, Erin Molan and Ed Kavalee for their passion and commitment to the 2DayFM Sydney Breakfast show over the past three and a half years.

SCA Chief Content Officer, Dave Cameron, said: “We are incredibly thankful to Hughesy, Ed and Erin for their unwavering dedication in making the 2DayFM Breakfast show a fun way to wake up Sydney each morning since 2020, and we wish them the very best with the continuation of their outstanding careers.
