Ahead of NAIDOC Week 2024, NITV Radio has released a new podcast, Ngiyang, which tells the story of how the Wiradyuri language is being reclaimed by the people of central NSW and celebrates Indigenous perspectives.

Continuing NITV Radio’s proud tradition of championing First Nations stories, knowledges, cultures and voices, Ngiyang gives multicultural and multilingual audiences a glimpse into the journey of reclaiming and reviving the Wiradyuri language as well as the triumphs of teaching and learning Wiradyuri.

As part of SBS’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), NITV Radio will expand content in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and promote language growth through its podcast content.

Hosted by Lowanna Grant, NITV Radio Executive Producer, the new podcast features Wiradyuri language pioneer, Uncle Stan Grant Senior, along with language teachers and learners, speaking their language and how this has enriched their lives as Wiradyuri people.

An insightful and personal look into the importance of First Nations languages, Uncle Stan Grant Senior tells how his grandfather Wilfred Johnson taught him Wiradyuri language as a child and instructed him to keep the language alive.

Host Lowanna Grant is the granddaughter of Uncle Stan Grant Senior and also studied Wiradyuri language herself: “I’m thrilled to share the stories in Ngiyang with all Australians because it records a part of our history – the reclamation and revival of Wiradjuri language.

“Ngiyang celebrates what our Elders have achieved and what is being done to secure language and culture for the next generation of Wiradyuri people.

“These are stories close to my heart, and it’s been a privilege to record my pop telling his story in his own words as well as speak to other Wiradyuri people about their language journey, and hopefully help more Australians connect meaningfully with the longest continuous culture on the planet.”

The experiences of guests are told in first-person and share how Wiradyuri language is being revitalised and how Wiradyuri people are being empowered through reclaiming their language.

Each guest on the podcast shares how they learned the language, including members of Uncle Stan Grant Senior’s family who were instrumental to the restoration of the Wiradyuri language and the development of the first Wiradyuri language dictionary.

Teachers, students and artists share their favourite word or phrase in Wiradyuri as well as how they are passing on the knowledge they have obtained, what it means to speak in language and how it has enriched their lives as Wiradyuri people.

The ABC is celebrating NAIDOC week with an extensive collection of special content across all platforms headlined by the LIVE broadcast of the 2024 NAIDOC Awards from Tarndanya (Adelaide) from 7.30pm (AEST) on Saturday.

NAIDOC Week 2024 will be held across the country from July 7-14, with the theme this year of Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud.

Led by ABC Indigenous, the ABC will showcase Indigenous storytelling across its screen, audio and digital platforms, including the launch of series four of Big J & Little Cuz. Featuring the voices of Deborah Mailman, Miranda Tapsell and Mark Coles Smith, season four also mark’s the show’s 50^th episode.

Head ABC Indigenous Kelrick Martin said the ABC is continuing its tradition of celebrating NAIDOC with high-quality content offerings across the entire ABC.

“The ABC is proud to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2024, with a variety of compelling, entertaining content for all Australians. During NAIDOC Week, and every week throughout the year, we recognise and uplift First Nations stories from around the country, and champion our incredibly talented Indigenous content creators and presenters,” he said.

As the Official Broadcast and Education Partner for NAIDOC week, the ABC will telecast the NAIDOC Awards on Saturday night hosted by Total Control star Rob Collins, 10 News First presenter Narelda Jacobs, and comedian Steph Tisdell.  MTV and ARIA award-winning musician Jess Mauboy will headline the night’s entertainment and the ceremony will be streamed on ABC iview and simulcast on NITV.

ABC iview will feature a NAIDOC Week collection featuring Indigenous programs curated for audiences, including the NAIDOC Awards, BlakBall, Black comedy, Preppers, looking Black and First Weapons.

The ABC TV premiere of The Last Daughter follows the NAIDOC Awards. The acclaimed documentary tells the story of one woman’s mission to unearth the truth about her past and to reconcile the two sides of her family.

There will also be a live simulcast of the NAIDOC Awards on Saturday night on ABC local radio introduced by Christine Anu.

Conversations with Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski on Radio National features a week of first nations interviews and storytelling from July 8, with guests including Ken Wyatt, Tony Armstrong and John Paterson. On Saturday, Awaye! is celebrating the extraordinary life and work of Aunty Dulcie Flower while Double J has a special Take 5 with Zan Rowe on Sunday July 12th featuring First Nations hip hop artist DOBBY.

Marty Sheargold and Triple M today confirmed that Sheargold has decided to step down from the 105.1 Triple M Melbourne Breakfast shift, however he remains an important member of the Triple M and LiSTNR family. Sheargold has scaled back from the Breakfast shift, as he continues to balance his many commitments including his stand-up comedy and appearing on some of Australia’s favourite TV programs including the up-coming new season of critically acclaimed Fisk.

Reflecting on his decision, Sheargold said: “Taking an extended break at the end of last year has reinforced the importance of spending more quality time with my family. As a result, I have made the decision to prioritise self-care, maintaining a better work/life balance and will not be returning to my Triple M Breakfast show.

After five years on the couch Lisa Millar this morning broke the news that she will leave ABC News Breakfast to focus full-time on her other exciting projects across the ABC.

The accomplished journalist and presenter departs as News Breakfast co-host on 23 August but will remain a regular presence on the ABC, continuing on from her success as narrator of hit series Muster Dogs – recently nominated for a Logie, guest presenter of Back Roads and co-host of popular podcast series The Newsreader.  Millar will also present Muster Dogs: Where are they now?  later this year.

Millar first presented News Breakfast in 2018 before joining fellow host Michael Rowland on the couch permanently the following year.

“What a blast the past five years has been, whether it was interviewing prime ministers and global thought leaders or getting karaoke encouragement from my childhood idol Gladys Knight,’’ Millar said.

“In 35 years of journalism I’ve never done anything so exciting, unpredictable, and fun. It’s only worked because of the awesome team in front of the cameras and behind the scenes who kept me laughing.

“Most importantly, I want to thank our viewers who brought me into their homes and lives every morning. I’ve loved sharing breakfast with you all.

“I’m excited to hit the road and discover more of the incredible stories that make up the remarkable tapestry of our culture. There are so many adventures ahead, whether it be with Back Roads, Muster Dogs, or new projects we’re cooking up. What a privilege it is to be a part of that future.”

Millar joined the ABC in 1993 and went on to establish herself as one of the finest journalists in the country.

She is one of the ABC’s longest-serving foreign correspondents, serving as Bureau Chief in both the US and Europe during periods of extraordinary global turmoil. She has covered stories including US presidential elections, the Boston bombing, the Sandy Hook school shooting, Hurricane Sandy, the terrorist attacks in Paris, as well as royal weddings and Olympic Games.

Supercars, in partnership with LiSTNR, today announced a new podcast, Drivers Only, which takes super fans behind the scenes with some of the best Supercars drivers.

Launching today, Drivers Only offers fans unfiltered and raw insights directly from the drivers themselves, taking fans behind the scenes with the sport’s biggest names, allowing listeners to hear directly from their favourite drivers regularly between each round of the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship.

• Ensure the financial health and sustainability of the 3ZZZ through sound financial management, budgeting, and fundraising strategies, reporting to the executive committees and the board through the president.
• Oversee the preparation of annual budgets, financial reports, and audits, ensuring transparency and accountability.
• Regularly monitor government and non-government funding available
• Prepare funding submissions and ensure acquittal reporting completed and submitted.

 Advocacy and Representation:

• Represent the 3ZZZ at various forums, including government, industry, and community events, advocating for the interests of ethnic broadcasters.
• Support multiculturalism and ethnic broadcasting and volunteerism.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, media organisations, community groups, and sponsors.
• Provide ongoing advice to the executive committee and board on policy matters.
• Develop policy submissions and policy statements as mandated by the Board of Directors.
• Oversee the development and implementation of policy, programs and initiatives that support ethnic community broadcasting and any targeted groups, in consultation broadcasters/committees of these groups and approval of executive committees and board.
• Ensure the delivery of high-quality services and resources to 3ZZZ volunteers, ethnic groups, members and the broader community.

  Governance and Compliance:

• Ensure the organisation operates in compliance with legal, regulatory, and ethical standards.
• Work with the Board of Directors to ensure effective governance practices are in place.
• Ensure all HR policies and procedures are compliant with legal and regulatory requirements.

Leadership:

Provide strong leadership to the 3ZZZ team including staff and volunteers, fostering a positive and collaborative workplace culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion.

• Handle employee and volunteer management issues with sensitivity and fairness, ensuring an engaged, harmonious and respectful workplace.
• Encourage open communication, teamwork, and a commitment to the 3ZZZ’s purpose and values.
• Proven track record in senior leadership roles within non-profit organisations, social enterprises, or community-focused institutions.
• Comprehensive understanding of non-profit governance, regulatory compliance, and financial management.

Communication:

Written and/or personal communication skills are required as this role has responsibilities in monitoring organisational performance, encouraging best practice and reporting outcomes – working with others is key to success in this role.

Technology:

Technology proficiency is key to success in this role and providing timely information to the executive and wider organisation is critical.

Qualifications:

Tertiary qualifications, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.

Experience:

• Significant and progressive leadership experience in peak bodies or membership focused associations.
• Extensive experience in stakeholder engagement, including working with Boards, donors, community leaders, and government officials.
• Strong background in financial oversight, including budgeting, fundraising, and resource allocation.

Fundamentals:

• Current VIC Driver’s license
• Clear national criminal check
• Clear working with children checks.
