ABC wins 13 Clarion Awards, with Peter McCutcheon honoured for contribution to journalism<\/strong><\/p>\n

The ABC’s journalists were recognised for their excellence in reporting, taking home 13 of 30 awards at the 2024 Queensland Clarion Awards.<\/p>\n

The awards included New Journalist of the Year, Innovation, Most Outstanding Final Year Journalism \u2013 Graduating,\u00a0<\/strong>Social Issues Reporting, Indigenous Issues Reporting, Multicultural Reporting, Rural Journalism, Broadcast Report and Feature Article or Opinion Piece.<\/p>\n

Veteran ABC journalist Peter McCutcheon received the Most Outstanding Contribution to Journalism award for his work as a reporter for more than 35 years.<\/p>\n

He was acknowledged for his work across ABC News programs and outlets, from\u00a07.30<\/em>\u00a0to radio current affairs and the 7PM News bulletin, as well as his role as a mentor to dozens of journalists.<\/p>\n

Julian Fell was named New Journalist of the Year, with the judges describing his trio of work as \u201cimpactful, interesting and unique\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom thorough research into making money on TikTok, to the fascinating profile of a local sleuth tracking down our stolen data, Julian has shown an excellent ability in searching for stories that have meaning to a large audience, and telling them in a thought-provoking and charming style,\u201d\u00a0the judges said. \u201cHe clearly possesses much-needed commitment, tenacity and drive for high-quality journalism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Examples of Julian\u2019s work include\u00a0Customers suddenly find their new phones can\u2019t make calls or send texts<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Lawyer linked to ‘parasitic’ AI content network identified<\/a><\/p>\n

The Innovation award went to the Story Lab team of Cristen Tilley, Julian Fell, Ash Kyd, Teresa Tan and Tim Leslie for\u00a0Inside TikTok\u2019s Money Machine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The judges said this\u00a0<\/em>investigation into the gift economy of TikTok Live was a powerful expose into a side of Big Tech that deserves more scrutiny.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe storytelling was distinctive and visually compelling, with visualisations that helped readers digest what was unearthed through an ambitious data collection project,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

Josh Robertson was part of a team recognised in the Social Issues Reporting category for its work across News Online, Four Corners and 7.30 on \u2018Trapped: An investigation into the systemic mistreatment of people with disabilities\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The judges said the team\u2019s entry \u201cprovides an unflinching and confronting look at the stark and sometimes Kafkaesque realities of Australia\u2019s treatment of prisoners under forensic orders. Three harrowing tales capture the spectrum of these troubling cases, all while never losing sight of the humanity of the subjects.\u201d<\/p>\n
