{"id":1969,"date":"2025-11-02T17:46:49","date_gmt":"2025-11-02T06:46:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/radioindustrynews.com.au\/?p=1969"},"modified":"2025-11-02T17:46:49","modified_gmt":"2025-11-02T06:46:49","slug":"once-upon-a-lie-podcast-the-sinister-side-of-fairy-tales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radioindustrynews.com.au\/index.php\/2025\/11\/02\/once-upon-a-lie-podcast-the-sinister-side-of-fairy-tales\/","title":{"rendered":"ONCE UPON A LIE PODCAST &#8211; THE SINISTER SIDE OF FAIRY TALES"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aftrs.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Once-Upon-a-Lie-Podcast-Header-957x480-c-default.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What if the fairy tales we grew up with weren\u2019t as innocent as they seemed?&nbsp;<strong><em>Once<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<strong><em>Upon A Lie&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>podcast&nbsp;explores the sinister origins of the world\u2019s most beloved fairytales.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Produced by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aftrs.edu.au\/award-course\/graduate-diploma-in-radio-and-podcasting\/\">Graduate Diploma in Radio and Podcasting<\/a>&nbsp;(GDRP) students at the Australian Film Television and Radio School,&nbsp;<em>Once Upon A Lie&nbsp;<\/em>takes listeners \u2013 across five episodes \u2013 on a voyage across centuries to uncover how these fairy tales evolved, why they still enchant us today and the dark truths that lie beneath \u2018happily ever after\u2019.&nbsp;From&nbsp;<em>Cinderella<\/em>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<em>Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood&nbsp;<\/em>and<em>&nbsp;Beauty and the Beast<\/em>, the podcast reveals unknown cultural, historical and psychological threads behind the stories that have endured for generations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Audiences will step into the shadows of the stories we thought we knew; where love, loss and moral warning intertwine in ways far darker than we were ever told.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AFTRS GDRP students&nbsp;Annabelle Moore&nbsp;and&nbsp;Mark Williamson&nbsp;(hosts) and&nbsp;Kelly Monisse&nbsp;(narrator), will bring the stories to life with rich sound design and voice acting providing a modern retelling of the fairy tale based on its original meaning.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jo Henwood, Co-founder, Public Officer and \u2018Ring Maiden\u2019 of&nbsp;<em>The Australian Fairy Tale Society,&nbsp;<\/em>will also help explain these fairy tale origins and the adaptations each tale has gone through over time to get to how we know them today.&nbsp; The podcast kicks off with an exploration into our glass slipper heroine&nbsp;<em>\u2018Cinderella\u2019<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Industry mentors&nbsp;Jen Goggin&nbsp;<em>(Lecturer at AFTRS&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>Founder of You\u2019ll Never Believe Productions)<\/em>,&nbsp;Kate Pattison&nbsp;<em>(Social Media Director, The Idea Cult)<\/em>,&nbsp;Chris Marsh&nbsp;<em>(<\/em><em>Senior Lead, Future State Sound Design&nbsp;<\/em>and<em>&nbsp;Audio Production at<\/em>&nbsp;<em>LiSTNR Original Podcasts, SCA<\/em><em>)&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;Lindsey Green&nbsp;<em>(Executive Producer, LiSTNR)&nbsp;<\/em>have provided guidance and mentoring to the group of AFTRS students who have collaborated on the podcast.&nbsp;<em>&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jen Goggin&nbsp;said:&nbsp;<em>\u201cI laughed, I learned, and I questioned what we\u2019ve been thinking telling children these horrific tales! The&nbsp;<\/em><strong>Once Upon a Lie<\/strong>&nbsp;<em>podcast fed my curiosity, while giving me the best type of podcast escapism. With its mix of immersive storytelling, interwoven intriguing facts and comedic commentary, it made the oldest stories in the world feel fresh and fascinating. A real creative feat by the podcast production team behind it.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sound Mentor Chris Marsh added:&nbsp;<em>\u201cFrom a sound design perspective \u2026 taking on the world of fairy tales retelling and reimagining them opens up so many opportunities for rich, immersive, layered sound \u2026 but is also no easy task.
