In a LiSTNR exclusive, the band tell their remarkable story in their own words in a five-part audio docuseries titled\u00a0<strong><em>Cold Chisel<\/em><\/strong>, hosted by\u00a0<strong>The Superjesus\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Sarah McLeod.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Made in partnership with Cold Chisel, the docuseries features brand-new, in-depth interviews with original band members\u00a0<strong>Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss, Phil Small<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Don Walker<\/strong>\u00a0and drummer\u00a0<strong>Charley Drayton<\/strong>, who took over from the late\u00a0<strong>Steve Prestwich<\/strong>. Covering pivotal moments of the band\u2019s history, the series explores the highs and lows of their extraordinary story including their reflections on the legendary\u00a0<em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Last Wave of Summer\u00a0<\/em>comeback tour in 1998, which\u00a0<strong>Jimmy Barnes<\/strong>\u00a0struggled through. \u201cI was pretty out of it and wild and had a death wish,\u201d Barnes said. \u201cBut I\u2019d get into the middle of Cold Chisel singing and that was the only time I felt comfortable. It must have been painful for the guys to be around. I was like a Tasmanian devil, I just never stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cold Chisel has sold over seven million albums and are currently thrilling audiences of all ages on their\u00a0<em>The Big Five-O<\/em>\u00a0national tour. The tour has sold over 120,000 tickets and follows their recent no.1 compilation album\u00a0<em>50 Years \u2013 The Best Of<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis podcast is\u00a0<em>OUR<\/em>\u00a0story, from late 1973 through to today,\u201d says Cold Chisel frontman,\u00a0<strong>Jimmy Barnes<\/strong>. \u201cIt\u2019s warts and all, highs and lows, as told by us and by some of our friends and colleagues who joined us on the ride. 50 friggin years! Who would have thought it? We certainly didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it\u2019s brilliantly hosted by our good friend, Sarah McLeod.\u00a0Strap yourself in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah McLeod fronts the ARIA-winning band The Superjesus, which is opening for Cold Chisel on their current tour as they play sold-out shows across Australia. \u201cI\u2019ve always felt a connection with Cold Chisel,\u201d McLeod said. \u201cNot just because their songs speak to me, as they do most Australians, but also because we\u2019re also from Adelaide and The Superjesus were signed to\u00a0WEA, the same label as Chisel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were signed by Chisel\u2019s\u00a0tour manager Mark Pope, who would tell us colourful\u00a0stories about life on the road with them. We admired the band, their grit, rock n\u2019 roll stamina and fortitude to do it their own way. They are the real deal, a proper rock band. To watch them re-emerge all these years later has been inspiring to witness, it\u2019s such a killer story, so of course I want to tell it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LiSTNR Music Features Journalist, Cameron Adams, said: \u201cDoing extensive interviews with the band and people in their orbit has been eye-opening. This is a wild story \u2013 incredible highs and devastating lows. They also made some incredible business moves, including owning all their own music and setting a career blueprint for other artists to follow. It is also a testament to a band who knew they had something special and always played by their own rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Executive Head of\u00a0LiSTNR\u00a0Audience and Growth, Grant Tothill, said: \u201cThere are not many Australians who haven\u2019t listened to Cold Chisel\u2019s music. Three subsequent episodes will be released over the following weeks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Cold Chisel<\/em>, LiSTNR\u2019s exclusive audio docuseries, explores:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cold Chisel being rejected by every record label in Australia for having \u201cno commercial potential\u201d before being signed for $700.<\/li>\n<li>The Australian classic song\u00a0<em>Khe Sanh<\/em>\u00a0being banned from radio due to offensive lyrics and the song\u2019s producer revealing whether Chisel recorded a \u2018clean\u2019 version.<\/li>\n<li>Chisel imploding on their first American tour in 1981 after having to start from scratch and battle indifference and homesickness.\u00a0 \u201cWhen you\u2019re in business class in your home country and you have to go back to the back of the bus it\u2019s undignified\u2026maybe ego plays part of it,\u2019 says tour manager\u00a0<strong>Mark Pope<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The tensions that led to Cold Chisel splitting in 1983, after the fractured recording of the No.1 album\u00a0<em>Twentieth Century<\/em>\u00a0and the legendary\u00a0<em>Last Stand<\/em>\u00a0farewell tour. \u201cIt was a relief for me because the band was an unhappy place,\u201d\u00a0<strong>Don Walker<\/strong>\u00a0says. \u201cI was angry about a lot of things. I thought we should have been the biggest band in the world. I thought that had been sabotaged. It was an overwhelming relief for me to get away from it.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Cold Chisel\u2019s surprise reformation for\u00a0<em>The Last Wave of Summer<\/em>\u00a0comeback tour and album \u2013 which\u00a0<strong>Jimmy Barnes<\/strong>\u00a0struggled through. \u201cI was pretty out of it and wild and had a death wish. But I\u2019d get into the middle of Cold Chisel singing and that was the only time I felt comfortable. It must have been painful for the guys to be around. I was like a Tasmanian devil, I just never stopped.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The tragic passing of the band\u2019s original drummer\u00a0<strong>Steve Prestwich<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 and Chisel\u2019s decision to carry on \u201cAs time went on,\u201d bassist\u00a0<strong>Phil Small<\/strong>\u00a0says, \u201ceveryone just sort of felt that if Steve was here, he\u2019d probably would want us to continue.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The band recruiting powerhouse drummer\u00a0<strong>Charley Drayton<\/strong>, whose wife \u2013 the late\u00a0<em>Divinyls<\/em>\u00a0frontwoman\u00a0<strong>Chrissy Amphlett<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 would make an emotional appearance on stage with Cold Chisel. \u201cWhen she walked out on stage, I\u2019d never heard an applause like it. The place went apeshit, it was incredible, and she felt it and that was exactly what she needed. I was there with her guidance to look out for Chisel, and they were there for me to look out for me for us all having to let Chrissy go.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The modern era of Cold Chisel, releasing more chart-topping albums and undertaking huge tours while finding a new way to work together. \u201cThese days we\u2019re very careful of each other, to the best of our capacity,\u201d Don Walker says. With each of us our top skill is not social.\u00a0I don\u2019t think we could be a full-time band again.
