{"id":567,"date":"2024-08-28T01:50:38","date_gmt":"2024-08-28T01:50:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.radioindustrynews.com.au\/?p=567"},"modified":"2024-08-28T01:50:38","modified_gmt":"2024-08-28T01:50:38","slug":"nine-radio-breaches-commercial-disclosure-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/radioindustrynews.com.au\/index.php\/2024\/08\/28\/nine-radio-breaches-commercial-disclosure-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Nine Radio breaches commercial disclosure rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Radio 2GB Sydney Pty Ltd and Radio 3AW Melbourne Pty Ltd have breached broadcasting rules by failing to disclose commercial agreements between their presenters and companies featured in their current affairs programs.<\/p>\n<p>An investigation\u00a0by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) into 2GB\u2019s\u00a0<em>Ben Fordham Live<\/em>\u00a0program looked into comments made in a broadcast on 3 August 2023 that were favourable to ride-share company Uber. The\u00a0investigation found a commercial agreement in place between Uber and the program host at the time of the broadcast was not disclosed on-air.<\/p>\n<p>A separate ACMA investigation into\u00a0<em>3AW Afternoons\u00a0<\/em>broadcasts that also aired in August 2023 found that comments favourable to automotive manufacturer BMW were made by the program host without disclosing that there was\u00a0a commercial agreement in place between BMW and the host.<\/p>\n<p>Both 2GB and 3AW also failed to publish details on their websites of commercial agreements made by their current affairs presenters, as is required by the commercial disclosure rules.<\/p>\n<p>Authority Member Creina Chapman said adequately disclosing commercial agreements is crucial for transparency in current affairs programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese kind of commercial disclosure breaches have the potential to erode the public\u2019s trust in current affairs programming,\u201d Ms Chapman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListeners deserve to know what commercial agreements are in place and how those deals might relate to what they are hearing on-air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acma.gov.au\/publications\/2024-08\/report\/investigation-report-and-remedial-directions-radio-2gb-sydney-pty-ltd-radio-3aw-melbourne-pty-ltd-and-radio-4bc-brisbane-pty-limited\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"45f5eb62-32fb-4420-9329-704f9747fbc8\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">investigations<\/a>\u00a0and breach findings, the ACMA has issued 2GB and 3AW with remedial directions requiring relevant current affairs presenters, producers and sales staff to undertake formal training on the commercial disclosure requirements.<\/p>\n<p>2GB is also required to commission an external audit of the processes it has in place to comply with the rules.
