{"id":2268,"date":"2026-02-05T14:34:55","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T03:34:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/radioindustrynews.com.au\/?p=2268"},"modified":"2026-02-05T14:34:55","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T03:34:55","slug":"queer-renegades-sbs-audios-new-podcast-reclaiming-australias-queer-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/radioindustrynews.com.au\/index.php\/2026\/02\/05\/queer-renegades-sbs-audios-new-podcast-reclaiming-australias-queer-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Queer Renegades: SBS Audio\u2019s new podcast reclaiming Australia\u2019s queer history"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/aboutus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/SBS_QueerRenegades_Hero_16x9.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In the lead up to Mardi Gras, rebels and resistance fuel&nbsp;<em>Queer Renegades<\/em>, a new SBS Audio podcast spotlighting the trailblazers who helped shape Australia\u2019s queer history \u2013 stories often overlooked or erased.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hosted by Iranian-Australian writer and broadcaster Farz Edraki,&nbsp;<em>Queer Renegades&nbsp;<\/em>challenges the heteronormative lens cast on history, centring the voices of daring trailblazers from the LGBTQ+ community who questioned the status quo and created change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Timed to launch ahead of Mardi Gras, the series explores stories of queer activism and rebellion, from the legacy of Dykes on Bikes, who act as protectors of the LGBTQ+ community, to newly arrived refugees seeking queer connection, and First Nations artists and curators forging new cultural spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s be honest \u2013 when it comes to history, queer stories are often erased by a default lens we\u2019re rarely challenged to question,\u201d said Edraki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe truth is, queer people exist in every culture, and shared queer identity can connect deeply diverse lives \u2013 there are incredible stories of camaraderie and bravery. People who have stood up to the status quo and made change possible. We want to highlight these people and their stories.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>David Hua, Director of Audio and Language Content at SBS<\/strong>&nbsp;said, \u201cAustralia offers comparatively greater freedom for many LGBTQ+ people, but that didn\u2019t happen by accident.&nbsp;<em>Queer Renegades&nbsp;<\/em>creates space to hear from those who shaped it, lived it, and continue to challenge it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt SBS we\u2019re here to champion the voices and stories we hear least, amplifying lived experiences and perspectives to build belonging, connection, and pride.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each&nbsp;episodes marks a key moment of activism&nbsp;\u2013 whether&nbsp;an event, moment or individual.
